Review of injury at work::Workers COMP Settlements?

Some               people               will               call               in               sick               to               work               at               the               slightest               hint               of               a               scratchy               throat               while               others               could               be               suffering               from               meningitis               behind               their               three-piece               desk.

Calling               in               sick               to               work               can               mean               getting               behind               on               deadlines               or               irritating               your               boss,               but               sometimes               you               just               can't               make               it               in               and               you               have               to               make               that               uncomfortable               call.

Regardless               of               your               work               ethic,               however,               there               are               a               few               rules               to               follow               when               deciding               whether               to               call               in               sick.

You'll               need               to               consider               the               necessity               of               your               presence               at               work               as               well               as               the               severity               of               your               illness.

In               most               cases,               employers               will               defer               to               the               employee               when               evaluating               whether               he               or               she               should               call               in               sick.

Your               absence               for               a               day               or               two               probably               won't               cause               your               company               to               shut               down               its               production               and               your               colleagues               will               thank               you               for               not               spreading               the               joy               of               a               stomach               bug               or               cold.

However,               some               sicknesses               require               that               you               call               in               sick               to               work,               while               others               leave               it               up               to               interpretation.
Stomach               Bugs:               Some               stomachaches               are               the               result               of               bad               food               or               poor               digestion               while               others               are               bacterial               or               viral               in               nature.

Since               doctors               often               can't               tell               the               difference               between               the               two,               you'd               be               better               off               staying               at               home               until               you               feel               better.

You               don't               want               to               spread               a               virus               to               your               co-workers               or               your               boss               and               you'll               be               uncomfortable               all               day.

Not               only               that,               but               it               can               be               embarrassing               when               you're               running               to               the               bathroom               every               five               minutes.
Flu:               One               of               the               worst               illnesses               to               come               down               with               is               the               flu,               which               not               only               causes               cold-like               symptoms               but               also               makes               you               feel               achy               and               sore               all               over.

The               flu               is               highly               contagious,               so               you               should               never               go               to               work               when               you               have               it.

And               contagion               aside,               you               probably               won't               be               up               to               doing               much               of               anything               besides               sitting               behind               your               desk.

Note:               It               is               especially               important               that               you               call               in               sick               to               work               with               the               flu               if               you               work               around               or               with               food.
Sore               Throat:               In               some               cases,               a               sore               throat               is               just               the               result               of               a               little               drainage               or               a               small               cold.

Sometimes,               however,               it               can               be               an               indication               of               the               very               contagious               strep               throat.

It's               quite               easy               for               your               general               practitioner               to               tell               you               whether               or               not               you               have               strep;               he'll               take               a               swab               of               your               throat               and               the               results               will               be               back               in               five               or               ten               minutes.

Wait               for               the               culture               results               before               returning               to               work               and               if               you               have               strep,               wait               at               least               twenty-four               hours               to               return               after               you've               begun               the               antibiotic.
Fever:               A               fever               can               be               indicative               of               any               number               of               illnesses,               many               of               which               are               contagious.

Until               you               feel               better               or               until               you               know               the               source               of               the               fever,               I               would               recommend               calling               in               sick               to               work.

A               fever               usually               is               a               sign               of               infection,               so               you               don't               want               to               infect               everyone               else               in               your               office.
Rash:               This               is               really               a               judgment               call               when               it               comes               to               calling               in               sick               to               work.

If               the               rash               is               highly               visible               and               you               don't               know               what               it's               from,               go               to               the               doctor               and               get               the               results               before               returning               to               work.

If               it               isn't               visible,               however,               and               you               know               that               it               isn't               contagious,               there's               really               no               reason               to               call               in.

Note:               If               the               rash               is               itchy,               burning               or               otherwise               uncomfortable,               call               in               sick               to               work.
Pain:               Sometimes               people               call               in               sick               to               work               not               because               of               an               illness,               but               because               of               injury.

Back               pain,               neck               pain,               shoulder               pain,               wrist               pain               and               other               types               of               pain               that               might               affect               your               ability               to               do               your               job               might               warrant               calling               in               sick               to               work.

You               are               the               best               judge               of               the               severity               of               your               pain               so               make               an               educated               decision               based               on               the               way               you               feel.
